Data sources and calculation methodology
Data sources and conversion to US dollars
Margin is the deposit your account holds for an open order, and it comes back when the order closes. We read prices, contract sizes and lot limits separately from Standard, Extra, Pro and Elite MT5 accounts held in USD.
Currency pairs: lots × contract size ÷ leverage, in the base currency. Other instruments: lots × contract size × price ÷ leverage. Both are converted to US dollars at the saved price for your direction.
XS.com limits applied on top of MT5
XS.com applies its leverage limits to each order, so the tool takes them from the tables XS.com publishes for EQ accounts: the step for your equity on each instrument type, the fixed limits, and the lower limits during HMR periods.
Where a table lists 0–3,000 and 3,001–6,000, the tool moves to the next step from USD 3,001. XS.com equity-based dynamic leverage (opens in a new tab)
Labels and timestamps
- Latest sample
- The time the prices were saved. All times are UTC. Older data appears when that time is more than an hour old while the market is open.
- Market closed
- The market for that instrument is closed, for example at the weekend, so the figure uses the last price before the close.
- Unconfirmed
- That side awaits a price or conversion, and the amount appears with a later sample.
- Below the minimum lot / Above the maximum lot
- The figure is scaled in proportion to your lot size. Set a size within the lot range shown in the row before you place the order.
Checked on 18 September 2026 (UTC). This date is separate from the tool’s data update times.

XS.com leverage goes up to 1:2000 and steps down as your equity grows
Currency pairs: 1:2000 up to USD 3,000
| Account equity (USD) | Currency pairs |
|---|---|
| Up to 3,000 | 1:2000 |
| 3,001 to 6,000 | 1:1000 |
| 6,001 to 20,000 | 1:500 |
| 20,001 to 40,000 | 1:400 |
| 40,001 to 100,000 | 1:200 |
| Above 100,000 | 1:100 |
On currency pairs, 1:2000 applies up to USD 3,000 of equity, and XS.com lowers the maximum step by step as the account grows. At 1:2000, 0.10 lot of EURUSD needs $5.74 with USD 1,000, $11.48 with USD 5,000 and $114.82 with USD 150,000.
Gold: 1:2000 up to USD 5,000, then eight steps
| Account equity (USD) | Gold (XAUUSD, XAUEUR) |
|---|---|
| Up to 5,000 | 1:2000 |
| 5,001 to 10,000 | 1:1000 |
| 10,001 to 20,000 | 1:500 |
| 20,001 to 50,000 | 1:200 |
| 50,001 to 100,000 | 1:100 |
| 100,001 to 200,000 | 1:50 |
| 200,001 to 400,000 | 1:25 |
| Above 400,000 | 1:10 |
Gold keeps 1:2000 up to USD 5,000 and then has eight steps, so 0.10 lot of gold needs $21.94 with USD 1,000 or 5,000 and $43.88 with USD 10,000. Type your equity into Account equity (USD) and the tool applies the step for every instrument. XS.com equity-based dynamic leverage (opens in a new tab)
Each instrument type has its own limit
| Instrument type | Up to USD 1,000 | Last step |
|---|---|---|
| Currency pairs | 1:2000 | 1:100 above 100,000 |
| Exotic pairs | 1:200 | 1:100 above 100,000 |
| Gold | 1:2000 | 1:10 above 400,000 |
| Silver | 1:2000 | 1:5 above 400,000 |
| Platinum, palladium | 1:50 | 1:20 above 100,000 |
| Indices, oil | 1:500 | 1:20 above 100,000 |
| Bitcoin, Ethereum | 1:200 | 1:25 above 20,000 |
Each type has its own ladder, and the tool uses the lower of your account leverage and that limit. This is why US30 reads Leverage 1:500 while the account is set to 1:2000: 0.10 lot needs $10.33 at either setting, and $51.64 once you choose 1:100.
Stocks, natural gas and other crypto have a fixed limit
Fixed leverage, whatever your equity
Stocks1:5
Natural gas (NGAS)1:20
Other crypto1:10
HK50, CNA50, USDXY1:50
Futures1:100
These rows keep the same limit as your equity grows, and a lower account leverage takes over when you choose one. Stocks trade on Standard and Pro with a minimum of 1 lot, one share, so 1 lot of Apple needs $67.19.
Margin rules are the same on Standard, Extra, Pro and Elite
Same on every account
- Maximum 1:2000 and the equity steps
- Limits per instrument type and during HMR
- Margin call 40%, stop out 20%
Different by account
- Spread and commission
- Swap
- Instruments: stocks on Standard and Pro
On 18 September 2026 we compared the margin settings of every instrument that Extra, Pro and Elite share with Standard. The limits, contract size and lot range matched on every one, and 0.10 lot of gold needed $21.94 on all four.
So choose the account for its trading costs, in the XS.com spread calculator and the XS.com swap calculator, and read the margin here on any of the four buttons.

XS.com lowers leverage for new trades around news and the weekend (HMR)
- NewsFrom 15 minutes before to 5 minutes after a major release.
- FridayThe last 2 hours before the market closes.
- MondayThe first hour after each instrument opens.
- HolidaysBefore an early market close.
| Instrument type | HMR limit with up to USD 5,000 |
|---|---|
| Currency pairs, gold | 1:200 |
| Indices, Bitcoin | 1:100 |
| Oil, silver, platinum | 1:50 |
| Exotic pairs, Ethereum | 1:50 |
XS.com calls these higher margin requirement (HMR) periods, and the lower limits apply to positions opened during them. Tick Estimate during higher margin requirements (HMR): 0.10 lot of EURUSD then needs $57.41 instead of $5.74, and gold $219.39 instead of $21.94.
HMR limits also step down with equity, and when your normal limit is already lower, that one applies. If you hold a hedge, keep free margin for the remaining side before you close one leg in these periods. XS.com equity-based dynamic leverage (opens in a new tab)
How to change your leverage on XS.com
- In the XS.com client area, open Accounts Overview and click View on the account.
- Next to Leverage, click Request New Leverage.
- Choose the new value and click Submit.
- The page confirms that the application has been received, and XS.com emails you once the change is approved.
On 18 September 2026 the new leverage showed on the account straight after the request. The list runs from 1:2000 down to 1:100 in six settings, the same ones the calculator offers.
Your setting works as a ceiling: on an EQ account, the step for your equity and the instrument’s own limit can bring the leverage lower, and the calculator shows the result for each row.
EQ and LT accounts: which limits apply to you
EQ accounts (e.g. Standard EQ)
- Leverage steps down with
- Equity
- New accounts
- Opened on MT5
LT accounts (e.g. Standard LT)
- Leverage steps down with
- The lots you hold in each instrument
- New accounts
- Opened on MT4
The end of your account name shows the model. In September 2026 the XS.com client area offered EQ types for a new live account on MT5 and LT types on MT4, and the calculator follows the EQ limits for MT5. On an LT account, check the lot bands on the XS.com lot-based dynamic leverage (opens in a new tab) page.
How many lots can you open with your balance?
This calculator shows the margin for a lot size you choose. For the reverse, the largest position your balance can open at your leverage, use the Max Lot & Zero-Cut Calculator. It also shows how far the price can move before your balance reaches zero.
The max lot tool uses one leverage for the whole position. Bring its lot size back here to check the XS.com limit for your equity, the instrument’s own limit and HMR before you trade.
Three things to check before you place the order
The order window on your platform gives the final figure. When it differs from the tool, one of these is usually the reason.
- The time. The tool uses the saved price under Latest sample. Prices move, and margin moves with them.
- Your leverage and equity. Set the leverage shown in your client area and enter your current equity, so the step applies. Account types and leverage can vary by region, so the terms of your own account come first.
- HMR periods. Near a major release, before the Friday close or after the Monday open, tick the HMR box.
Accounts in other currencies show the margin in that currency, and gold and silver have separate equity steps for JPY, THB and USC accounts. With those checked, plan around the number in the order window. XS.com: what leverage options does XS offer? (opens in a new tab)
