Data sources and how the figures are worked out
Data sources and conversion to US dollars
Margin is the deposit your trading account holds for an open order, and it comes back when the order closes. We read the symbol settings and prices separately from Premium, Pro, Zero and Unlimited MT5 accounts held in USD.
For currencies and gold, the margin is lots × contract size ÷ leverage, converted to US dollars at the saved price for your direction. For other instruments, it is lots × contract size × price ÷ the instrument’s leverage, or the fixed amount per lot where MT5 sets one.
HFM rules applied on top of MT5
The tool adds the leverage steps by equity, the lower leverage around news and market open or close, the volume bands for crypto and 24/7 gold from each instrument page, and the lot limits of the Unlimited account. HFM applies the volume bands when an order is placed, and the tool works out each band at its own leverage. HFM legal documents (opens in a new tab)
Labels and timestamps
- Latest sample
- The time the settings and prices were saved. All times are UTC. Older data appears when that time is more than an hour old while the market is open.
- Market closed
- The market for that instrument is closed, for example at the weekend, so the figure uses the last price before the close.
- Unconfirmed
- That side is waiting for a price or conversion in a later sample, and the amount appears once it arrives.
- Below the minimum lot / Above the maximum lot
- Your lot size is outside the saved limits for that instrument, and the figure is scaled in proportion.

What Is the Maximum Leverage at HFM?
HFM’s maximum leverage is 1:2000 on the Premium, Pro and Zero accounts, as long as your equity stays below USD 5,000. Equity is your balance plus the open profit or loss, swaps and commissions, and HFM lowers the maximum automatically as your equity grows.
| Account equity (USD) | Maximum leverage |
|---|---|
| Below 5,000 | 1:2000 |
| 5,000 to 39,999.99 | 1:1000 |
| 40,000 to 99,999.99 | 1:500 |
| 100,000 or more | 1:200 |
The step changes the margin more than most traders expect. A 1-lot gold trade needs about $210 with USD 1,000 in your trading account. Once your account equity passes USD 100,000, the same trade needs about $2,097, ten times as much, because the leverage is now 1:200.
To see your own figure, type your equity into Account equity (USD) in the tool, and the tool applies the step. On trading accounts with USD 300,000 or more of equity and over 50 lots open, HFM can also set 1:75 and tells you by email. HFM legal documents (opens in a new tab)
In a trading account under USD 5,000, the leverage steps by equity do not apply, so the time of the trade changes the margin more. During major news, 1 lot of gold needs about $1,398 instead of $210, almost seven times as much.
So if you trade gold around news, we think it is safer to plan your margin at 1:300, the news limit, and to treat 1:2000 as the limit for quiet hours.
How Much Margin Does HFM Need During News?
From 15 minutes before to 5 minutes after major economic news, HFM lowers the maximum leverage from 1:2000 to 1:300. So 1 lot of gold needs about $1,398 instead of $210, which is more than USD 1,000 in a trading account can cover.
To see your figure, tick Estimate for news and session times in the tool. The same limit applies at other busy times of the day, such as the hour around the daily rollover. At the start and the end of the trading week, set 1:100 or 1:200 in the tool.
HFM can also lower leverage on shares and stock market indices around company earnings. HFM legal documents (opens in a new tab)
Our guide to HFM leverage during news lists every time window and shows how the limit changes as your account grows. It also shows that a trade that you opened before the news keeps its margin, and only the trades that you open in the window get the lower limit.
Does Your Leverage Change the Margin on Every Instrument?
No. Only currency pairs and gold follow the leverage that you set on your trading account. Other instruments have their own limit, and the small text under each amount in the tool shows which rule applies.
Currency pairs and gold
On these rows, the tool shows your leverage, such as Leverage 1:2000, in green. The margin is the position size divided by your leverage, so a lower leverage raises the margin on every one of these rows at once.
For example, 0.10 lot of EURUSD needs $5.61 at 1:2000 and $112.29 at 1:100. That is twenty times as much, because the leverage is twenty times lower.
Indices, oil, silver and stocks
These instruments have a fixed maximum leverage, and the tool marks their rows Fixed leverage in amber.
| Market | Maximum leverage |
|---|---|
| USA30, USA100, USA500, GER40 | 1:1000 |
| JPN225, UK100 | 1:500 |
| USOIL, UKOIL | 1:200 |
| XAGUSD (silver) | 1:100 |
| Stocks and ETFs | 1:5 |
Your account leverage only matters here when it is lower than the instrument’s limit. At 1:100, 0.10 lot of USA30 needs $51.32 instead of $5.13. Silver needs $60.43 at both 1:2000 and 1:100, because its own limit is already 1:100.
Crypto and 24/7 gold
On crypto and XAUUSD247, the leverage depends on how many lots you hold in each symbol. The more you hold, the lower the leverage on the next part of the position.
BTCUSD leverage by volume
Up to 0.2 lot1:1000
0.2 to 15 lots1:500
15 to 20 lots1:200
20 to 25 lots1:50
Above 25 lots1:1
So 1 lot of Bitcoin needs about $148.66. The first 0.2 lot uses 1:1000, and the other 0.8 lot uses 1:500. Open a crypto row in the tool to see the bands for that symbol. HFM crypto instrument pages (opens in a new tab)
HFM applies these bands when you place the order, so the margin inside MT5 can read lower. The tool works out each band at its own leverage, so use its crypto figures to plan, and check the margin on your trading account once the order is open.
How Much Margin Do Gold and EURUSD Need at HFM?
The table below shows the margin for a buy on the Premium account at 1:2000, with USD 1,000 in the trading account.
| Market | 0.10 lot | 1 lot |
|---|---|---|
| XAUUSDGold · account leverage | $20.97 | $209.72 |
| EURUSDAccount leverage | $5.61 | $56.14 |
| GBPUSDAccount leverage | $6.62 | $66.21 |
| USDJPYAccount leverage | $5.00 | $50.00 |
| USA30Fixed 1:1000 | $5.13 | $51.32 |
| USA100Fixed 1:1000 | $3.10 | $31.01 |
| USOILFixed 1:200 | $4.53 | $45.34 |
| XAGUSDSilver · fixed 1:100 | $60.43 | $604.28 |
| BTCUSDBy volume | $8.26 | $148.66 |
| ETHUSDBy volume | $0.50 | $5.00 |
Gold needs almost four times the margin of EURUSD for the same lot size. Silver needs even more than gold, about $604 for 1 lot, because HFM limits silver to 1:100.
The margin grows with the lot size and moves with the price. On crypto, larger volumes also step into lower leverage. The tool at the top of this page shows today’s figures.
Is the Margin the Same on Premium, Pro and Zero?
Yes. The three accounts share the same maximum leverage of 1:2000, the same leverage steps by equity, and a margin call at 50% with stop out at 20%.
We compared the margin settings of all 169 instruments in the tool on the three accounts. The margin rate, the type of calculation and the contract size matched on every one, so the same trade needs the same margin on all three.
What differs is the cost of the trade: the spread, the commission and the swap. So choose the account for its costs in the HFM spread calculator and the HFM swap calculator. The Unlimited account works differently.
How Does Margin Work on the HFM Unlimited Account?
On the Unlimited account, the margin is close to zero up to 5 lots in each asset class. Each limit counts every open position in its class, and every class has its own limit.
Near-zero margin up to
Forex5 lots
Metals5 lots
Indices5 lots
Energies5 lots
Crypto and 24/7 gold
BTCUSD1 lot
ETHUSD50 lots
XRPUSD5 lots
XAUUSD2470.1 lot
Above the limit, new positions use the normal leverage for your account equity. With USD 1,000 in the trading account, 6 lots of EURUSD need $56.14, which is the margin for the sixth lot only.
That changes what a small trading account can hold. On the Premium account, 5 lots of gold need about $1,049, more than the whole USD 1,000. On the Unlimited account, the same 5 lots need almost no margin.
The low margin has a cost in risk. The margin call comes at 20% and stop out at 0%, so a losing position stays open until your equity is close to zero. HFM also sets the leverage on this account itself, so Change Leverage is not available.
HFM’s terms are for trades that carry market risk. Set-ups that remove that risk count as a breach and can cost you the unlimited leverage, for example hedging across trading accounts or closing one side of a hedge before news.
The account has other names in some countries. HFM offers it as InfinityX to residents of India, from USD 250, and as KATANA, for example on its Japanese site, from USD 500, with the same trading conditions. Choose Unlimited in the tool to see its figures. HFM Unlimited account (opens in a new tab)
If you are comparing Unlimited leverage across brokers, our high leverage comparison shows what Unlimited covers at each broker and when the normal leverage applies again.
Which Leverage Should You Enter in the Tool?
Enter the leverage of your HFM trading account, because the tool works out the margin on currency pairs and gold from that leverage. The tool offers the same 14 levels as HFM, from 1:2000 to 1:1.
You can see and change the leverage in your HFM Client Area, with Change Leverage in the menu of the trading account. Our HFM leverage guide shows each step with screenshots from a phone.
After a change, log in to MT5 again to see the margin at the new leverage.
How Many Lots Can You Open with Your Balance?
The lot size calculator answers this question, because it starts from your balance. You enter your balance, the amount you are willing to lose and your stop loss. It then shows the lot size for that risk and the largest lot that your margin allows at HFM.
The lot size calculator uses one leverage for the whole position. So bring its lot size back to the margin tool on this page, and check the leverage steps by equity, the crypto bands and the news limits at HFM before you trade.
Why Does the Order Window Show a Different Margin?
The order window on your platform gives the final figure. When it differs from the tool, the reason is usually one of these three.
- Time
The tool uses the price saved at Latest sample. Prices move, and the margin moves with them. - Leverage and equity
In myHF, check the leverage of your trading account. Then enter the same leverage and your current account equity in the tool, so the tool applies the right leverage step. - News and session times
Near a major release or a market open or close, tick the news box in the tool. Around the weekly open and close, set 1:100 or 1:200.
Two other things can also change the margin on your trading account. A fully hedged position needs no margin on the matched volume, and a trading account in a currency other than USD shows the margin in that currency.
How Do You Get a Rebate on Your HFM Trades?
Margin is only a deposit, and it comes back when you close the trade. What you pay is the spread, the commission on the Zero account, and the swap.
ForexFanClub pays a rebate on every lot that you trade at HFM. The rebate returns part of the spread and commission, and the HFM rebate guide explains the rates and the payments.
To receive the rebate, open your HFM trading account with the button below. HFM then records ForexFanClub as the partner of that trading account.
If you already trade at HFM, keep your HFM Client Area login and add one more trading account with Campaign ID 314605. The HFM rebate guide shows each step.
HFM Margin FAQ
- At what margin level does HFM call margin or stop out?
-
On Premium, Pro and Zero, the margin call comes at 50% and stop out at 20%. On the Unlimited account, they come at 20% and 0%.
Your margin level is your equity divided by the margin in use. HFM account comparison (opens in a new tab)
- Do hedged positions need margin on HFM?
-
A fully hedged position needs no margin for the matched volume. That means the same volume bought and sold on one instrument.
A partial hedge needs margin on the difference, and when you close one side, the normal margin comes back. HFM FAQ (opens in a new tab)
- Why is the crypto margin in the tool higher than in MT5?
-
HFM sets crypto leverage by volume when you place the order, and MT5 uses one saved rate. The tool follows HFM’s bands, so 1 lot of Bitcoin needs about $148.66 in the tool and $82.59 at the MT5 rate.
You have now seen what each position sets aside in margin. Forex FanClub’s rebate service returns part of the spread and commission on eligible HFM trades, and it is paid separately from the margin.
